Explore One of Mexico's Most Beautiful Beaches

Nestled in Baja California, Balandra Beach is celebrated as one of Mexico's most stunning beaches and ranks among the top 50 beaches worldwide. Its pristine beauty and serene environment have made it increasingly popular in recent years, yet it retains a sense of untouched spot.

Balandra offers a unique experience for everyone—whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or if you simply love adventures in nature. Located just 35 minutes from La Paz in Baja California Sur, this beach is a must-visit. With its powdery white sand, turquoise waters, and surrounding hills perfect for hiking, Balandra is a true gem waiting to be discovered.

Although Balandra is a public beach, it is currently a protected nature reserve, which means there are specific rules in place to preserve its natural beauty:

Hours and Capacity

Balandra operates in two five-hour blocks to manage the number of visitors:

· 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

· 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Each block allows a maximum of 450 visitors. Depending on the season, visitor numbers may vary, so it’s best to arrive a few minutes before your desired time block to avoid waiting in line. Parking is available and convenient both for cars and tours. A touristic fee of around 60.37 Mexican pesos (around 3.63 USD) per person needs to be covered.

Please note that these rates and schedules were as of early 2024 and may change. For the latest information, visit the local government website.

Activities

Once inside, start your visit by exploring one of Balandra’s three hills. They offer breathtaking panoramic views of the beach and surrounding area. Be aware that some hills may be closed at times, as indicated by the staff, to protect the local ecosystem.

After taking in the scenery, you can relax under one of the palapas on the central beach near the parking lot. These shaded structures are limited and do not include chairs, so bringing towels or folding chairs is advisable. If the central area is full, explore the adjacent bay to the right. Water shoes are recommended for the rocky path leading to this area.

The water at Balandra is consistently calm, clear, and shallow, making it perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply wading. As you reach the other bay, you’ll encounter the iconic “Hongo" a mushroom rock formation. This naturally sculpted rock is one of Balandra’s iconic landmarks.

Unlike many public beaches in Mexico, Balandra offers only specific recreational activities that enhance your experience while preserving the natural habitat. For those interested in marine life, snorkeling is a fantastic activity as the clear waters of Balandra are home to various sea creatures, making it a delightful spot for underwater exploration.

Departure

As your visit comes to an end, it’s advisable to start packing up about 15 minutes before the conclusion of your time block. Ensuring you have ample time to collect all waste and personal belongings, helping to maintain Balandra’s pristine condition for future visitors.

Balandra might not be a place you visit just once, as its captivating beauty and tranquility will draw you back time and again. Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or looking for a peaceful retreat, Balandra Beach offers something special for everyone.
